Holy Week Worship Schedule ~ 2025
Palm Sunday, April 13 ~ 8am, 10am, noon
The services begin with a jubilant tone as we gather for the Liturgy of the Palms and then process outdoors. As we process, waving our palm branches, we commemorate the day Jesus entered Jerusalem. The service takes a turn with the reading of the Passion Gospel. Reader parts are available (the form is at each parish near the bulletins), and there are 12 of them, so please sign up to read!
Holy Wednesday, April 16 ~ 6pm Evening Prayer at St. John’s
All are welcome!
Maundy Thursday ~ April 17 ~ 6pm at St. John’s
Maundy Thursday begins The Triduum, The Great Three Days, remembering Jesus’ Last Supper with the disciples, the agony in the garden of Gethsemane, and Jesus’ journey to the cross and crucifixion. You are invited to St. John’s at 6pm beginning with an Agape meal and then worship. During worship when we celebrate Holy Communion, we commemorate the institution of the Last Supper and the tradition of the Mandatum novum (New Commandment). The worship service includes footwashing (optional) and the stripping of the altar. Towards the end of the service, the Blessed Sacrament, representing Jesus, will be placed in the Altar of Repose. The Altar of Repose represents the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus asks his disciples to wait and watch and pray with him. The service ends with only a single candle lit, and the reading of John 14 ending with these words, “Rise, let us be on our way.” We depart in silence.
Good Friday ~ April 18
On this most solemn of days marking Jesus’ suffering, crucifixion and death, walk with Jesus following the Way of the Cross. Three opportunities are provided:
Noon – All Saints in Battlement Mesa
Please join us for an outdoor service (weather permitting) walking the Stations of the Cross. You will need good walking shoes, water and sunscreen as we walk the fourteen stations. The service ends with singing “Were you there?” around the altar table. There is also a beautiful outdoor labyrinth to walk if you would like more contemplation on this Holy Day.
5:30 – 7:00pm – Ecumenical Gathering at Sayre Park in Glenwood Springs
We will gather with our Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Methodist neighbors similar to what we did on Ash Wednesday at the Bluebird Café and Walk for Justice, supporting women, LGBTQIA+, immigrants, black and brown people, and the earth. There will be stations where you can participate in creating and displaying signs of support for our neighbors, center yourself with a labyrinth walk, listen to speakers from local activist organizations, and share ideas for continuing justice-focused actions. We heartily invite ALL who care about justice and mercy to join in, whatever motivates you to this work. Please bring a lawn chair.
6pm – St. John’s in New Castle
Another opportunity to worship on Good Friday, walking the Stations of the Cross. This service is indoors and you will be invited to read at one of the stations.
Holy Saturday, April 19
A quiet day of expectant waiting …
Easter Sunday, April 20 ~ 8am, 10am, and noon
The wondrous burst of joy delights the senses as we celebrate that Jesus is alive and God has swallowed up death forever. Witnessing and praising the empowering and liberating reality of Christ’s death and resurrection, we celebrate and participate in God’s unending love story and depart to share the good news with others.
THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN COLORADO We are followers of Jesus in our lives, every day.
We are here to bring the Kingdom of God to the complex, ambiguous, volatile, uncertain world of the 21st century.
From all of our different places on the spiritual path, we look for common ground.
We are open and welcoming to difference in all its beautiful manifestations and stand, as Jesus would, with the world.
We use discipleship, servanthood, and proclamation as our way.
Being Episcopalian means being involved. It does not mean we need to agree or be perfect.
